Roberta and Diego

Mistress Roberta and Master Diego

Greetings unto the Industrious Barony of Thescorre, from Mistress Roberta and Master Diego.

We would like your consideration for Baron & Baroness in the upcoming election.  We have many years and a variety of experiences to draw upon and we feel that this is a good base to start with.

Roberta found the SCA in 1989, jumped head first into the scribal arts and did not look back.  Roberta is also very interested in late period garments, but has dabbled in many other things over the years including rapier combat, middle eastern dance and various jobs at events.  Roberta began her journey in the Midrealm, had a slight detour into Ansteorra, back up to Northshield and finally has spent the past 22 years in AEthelemarc and more specifically, the Barony of Thescorre.  Roberta has been heavily involved in the Baronial scribal guild for most of those 22 years and also with the Household of Kyngesbridge.  Fundraising has also been a passion, with the primary project being pavilions and furnishings for the AEthelmearc Scribal College at Pennsic.

Diego also discovered the SCA in 1989, in the shire of Blacklake in western Ansteorra. Diego became interested in both heraldry and fencing.  Diego received his marshal’s warrant in 1991.  Two years later, Diego became a deputy regional marshal.  Over the course of the next 30 years, Diego has served as a regional marshal in three kingdoms, including two separate terms as Kingdom Marshal for AEthelmearc.  He had a hand in writing both the White Scarf Treaty for AEthelmearc and the Fencing Peerage.  On the A&S side of things, Diego has made boots, sewn fencing armor and even done applique & beading on a white scarf to be presented to a Queen.  At many schola events, he can be found teaching the up-and-coming fencers.

As Peers, we consider ourselves to be very approachable.  We are happy to talk with anyone on the many interests we have within the SCA.  We both have our own apprentices/proteges, but are happy to help guide anyone that asks.  Teaching and learning are a key part of our Society and thus, our Barony.

As Baron and Baroness, we would love to continue the traditions of the Barony.  We support all of the martial activities, especially for the Youth.  We enjoy seeing the creativity of our A&S community and would hope to find more ways to include our Youth in those endeavors.  The Youth are our future and there is a need throughout the Society to find ways to keep them engaged.  We enjoyed participating in the Makers Faire (pre-Plague) and would like to refine our display.  We would also like to find other similar demo options to consider.   Let’s use our Industriousness to bring new members into the Society.

YIS,

Mistress                                      Master

Roberta                                         Diego

Populace Questions:

  • Given that the population of the Barony had been steadily decreasing over the past 10+ years, before the pandemic hit, and given the limited number of active Barony members we have who’ve been (or still are) willing to fill offices, steward events or even compete in championships, why should we, the populace, vote to continue as a Barony with the accompanying requirements and expectations in order to maintain figureheads of the Crown, rather than downgrade our status to Shire thereby making some of our offices optional, and remove the pressure to maintain the higher participation standards expected among much larger groups?
  • How will you show your support for Thescorre both in town and at Pennsic?
  • Why did you decide to run for B&B, and why at this time?
  • What goals do you have for the barony, during and after the pandemic ends?
  • What do you think is going well in the barony, and what do you think needs work?
  • What are your thoughts on recruitment and retainment?
  • What are your thoughts on increasing diversity and ?

Our Statement of Reply:

Our Barony has been known as “industrious” for a long time and even during this time of plague, many have continued in this vein. Events have happened, martial activities have occurred as often as possible, guilds have produced great works. Some of our populous have stepped back and taken a break. This is the usual ebb and flow of many groups in the SCA. The challenge to the Barony is to find ways to keep members engaged and also to bring in new members. We would gladly consider any ideas to tackle this challenge, especially ways to involve our youth.

The virtual presence at events will be an aspect that needs to continue. The creativity of our populous will expand in more ways to bring activities to the virtual attendees. No longer will weather or distance be a hindrance to participation or our creativity.

Personally, we have a cumulative SCA history of over 60 years in 5 Kingdoms. In that time, we have seen the SCA to be an extremely inclusive organization. Can we do more? Yes! We would be most welcome to new ideas to attract more people from a more diverse cross section and to bring interested people into our community and chosen family.

There has never been a shortage of ideas within our Barony, only enough time to make them all happen. We would endeavor to encourage participation from more of our populous. If more people step up to do a small part, our Barony can accomplish even greater things and be THE example that other groups may strive to emulate.
