Macrame Bookmarks

Largess Entry – Macramé Bookmarks

Bookmarks Complete

I’ve created a series of macrame bookmarks made with cotton cord and wooden beads. Each bookmark has a pattern made with a series of square knots, and is finished with two tassels. A single tassel with atop an arc of strung wooden beads provides an anchor for the rest of the piece. Knotting–both practical and decorative–has been practiced in a variety of cultures dating back to pre-history. Macrame as we know it today dates back to the 13th century, and is thought to have originated in Arabic cultures. Examples of period macrame can be currently found at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which contains decorative examples from 15th century China and 16th century Italy.
