Join the Industrious Barony of Thescorre as we partake in our annual wintertime schola, this time with a new twist! As the plague keeps hold of our lands, we gather in the Æther for a day of classes and camaraderie, this time with an eye towards rediscovery. This year, we are putting a call out for classes on topics that, perhaps, were new to the teachers—things they have tried and learned (and even tried and failed)—or things that celebrate newcomers in learning all about the SCA. We all remember what it was like to be new, or to learn something new, and now is the time to celebrate it the way to celebrate mastering a craft! We will have multiple Zoom Rooms with classes, Court, and an opportunity for Roundtable Discussion (if there is desire).

We are looking for classes that highlight tips and tricks, beginner and intermediate skill-building, and classes that are all about the journey of learning rather than perfection of the crafts we celebrate! Our goal is to have a full range of classes that are geared to helping newcomers establish themselves in the SCA, classes that are geared towards experiments and the process of learning new skills, classes that help show that the pursuits we have in the SCA are accessible to everyone, from beginning to end. See “Classes” below.

We are also issuing a challenge to the Peers of the Kingdom (and beyond). We want the Peers to pick a skill, a craft, or a science (marshal or soft) that they have not trained and researched and instead, pick something new to explore. We want to inspire our Peers, the way they inspire us, to see the beauty in the Dream, to see the Dream as newcomers see it—with wonder and joy. Are you a cooking Laurel? We challenge you to pick up a needle and thread and try your hand at a sewing or embroidery project! Are you a Pelican, dedicated to service? We challenge you to explore one of the martial arts that you’ve not tried before! Are you a Knight, sworn to the path of chivalry? We challenge you to pick up a paintbrush and add illumination to your repertoire! Are you a Master of Defense, skilled with sharp wit and a blade? We challenge you to use your wits and stand as a voice herald! The possibilities for the challenge to the Peers is truly endless and we hope we can turn this into roundtable discussions about what was experimented with and what was learned; truly a new way to celebrate the Dream we all keep alive. See category under “Classes” below.

For our A&S competition, we want to have THREE different categories: (1) Truly first attempts; (2) The Journey [a project from the earliest learning of the art to as complete as you want to consider it]; and (3) Beauty in Failure [attempts that didn’t succeed, but that were experimentations, because this is how we learn]. More Specifics below under A & S.

**Please Note**
Even though this is an online event, you WILL be required to abide by the SCA Bullying and Harassment Policy.
You can find the policy HERE. Please read it and be ready to agree to it in order to be admitted to the event.

Classes:

We are looking for classes that highlight tips and tricks, beginner and intermediate skill-building, and classes that are all about the journey of learning rather than perfection of the crafts we celebrate! Our goal is to have a full range of classes that are geared to helping newcomers establish themselves in the SCA, classes that are geared towards experiments and the process of learning new skills, classes that help show that the pursuits we have in the SCA are accessible to everyone, from beginning to end. To that end, see below for the categories we are hoping for:

SCA Newcomers – Classes geared toward people who have just joined the SCA. These can be about SCA-specific terminology, or clothing that signifies a station/order. What even are the awards? What are the officers and what do they do? Think back to when you joined and teach about something you would have loved to know back then.

Novice – For people new to an art/science/activity. These are fondly referred to as “Beginner Classes”. What can you teach the very beginning of? Basic footwork? Simple stitching? Maybe making rice? Whatever you can think of to get someone started on their own journey.

Tips and Tricks – These will be classes taught by veterans of an art/science/activity, that offer hacks and helpful hints on how to accomplish that task easier/quicker/better. Maybe it’s a class on how not to burn out, or how to organize a kitchen so that you serve on time. Maybe you have tricks for how to herald a court or how to make a specific award medallion for easy largess. Anything you have done that makes life in the SCA easier and more fun, pass it on!

Peer Challenge – We issue a challenge (all in fun, of course) to the Peers of the Kingdom! We want you to try something NEW! Have you been doing service since you joined, but never had time to try out calligraphy? Now is your chance! Have you spent every event in the kitchen, but never had the opportunity to try out fencing? This pause in our SCA lives has allowed us a beautiful moment. We have the chance to think about what we really WANT. We have the grace of this moment to consider WHY we spend our precious little time on THIS hobby. Use this time to explore something new and then share that experience with us. You can do this as a question and answer, a show and tell, even amusing anecdotes about your times trying out your “new thing”. Step off your personal path for just a moment and try a different journey, even just for a short time. We hope it brings you joy and that you find renewed interest in our Dream.

Other – Of course there will be an “Other” category for those who have classes that they would like to share that don’t fit the above categories. We would just ask that you give us a short blurb about how it might fit the theme of “Reimagining the Dream – A New Journey”. You can get creative. It’s kinda what we do. 😉

Our Classrooms are FULL! Thank you to all of our teachers!

A&S Competition:

As noted in the announcement above, this year we will be having an A&S Competition with three categories:

1st Attempts – anything you have never done before, but always wanted to try out. Share your new-found excitement with us!

The Journey – Show us your project, from the earliest learning of the art to as complete as you want to consider it. You don’t need to have a “complete” project for this one, just show your work! 🙂

Beauty in Failure – Share your attempts that didn’t succeed. We learn from our mistakes, so this is your chance to help us all learn!

**For all of the categories, be prepared to share your favorite part of the experience, even if it was laughing at yourself when it didn’t work. Help us experience your art through your joy.**

Any images or documentation should be sent to: webminister AT thescorre DOT org. Please email them directly there with the subject line “C3R 2022”.

Sorry, no more A&S Entries are being accepted for this year.

BONUS ROUND!

Zoom Background Competition!

We will have a Zoom Background Competition, overseen by Mistress Abagail Kellogg.

There will be 3 Categories:

A: Historically Accurate – grab your hard kit and showcase your treasures!
B: Fun, Silly or Zany – Pirates? Dragons? Stuffy toys storming the castle? It’s all fair game here!
C: Digital – But not just anything you grab from Google! It must be your creation; a digital image made by you, or a photo/video you took on a trip

**Judging will occur during lunch break (currently 12-1 pm), so you have a bit of time in the morning (when you’re not enthralled by our awesome teachers) to set up your space. No registration needed for entry. Just show up at the appointed place and time and we will each take turns showing off our backgrounds (with assistance from one of our Zoomerators).

Check back for updates and have a blast with this. Remember that it’s all in fun and if it’s not fun, you can always leave your camera off. We love you just the same.
